My home's attic was lacking insulation. We had about an R-24. New homes usually get installed at an R-49. So I didn't know if removing all the old insulation and putting in new would be beneficial, or to just leave it there and install new insulation on top.

I ended up getting three quotes and Steve at ABC Insulation was the cheapest by almost 50%. He took the time to explain why leaving the existing insulation in the attic was beneficial and to just install new insulation over top.

During the install, he noticed a 4ft. x 4ft. fan that I had that was constantly letting air pass through. He said for $150 that he could build a foam door that would open and close like normal, but would seal the fan door when not in use (that was a no brainer.) He left, grabbed the materials, and made the door while the rest of his crew were working. Total time from arrival to finish was less than 3 hours.

He recommended getting retrofit lights in the ceiling and bathroom lights to further increase air seal. I bought them, they were stupid easy to install, and offered an amazing light, no bulbs to ever replace, and the air seal is perfect.

He didn't have to recommend the fan door or the retrofit lights, so that was a bonus.

He and his crew were very nice, were dog-friendly, cleanup after themselves. It was a great experience. Highly recommend.

For attic and basement insulation, I got four quotes and almost ruled out Steve's because it was BY FAR the lowest. Unlike another cellulose company that tried to upsell and gave a flat estimate without itemizing, Steve said that this was a very straightforward job and explained how he calculated the price and the scope of the job. He works with his crew, often unusual with an owner but makes a huge difference. He did extra work without complaining to open a jammed door for easy access for his guys. His solutions for my situation were clear and affordable; I wish I had done this years ago! I've been able to lower my thermostat and keep it warm; my first night with a properly insulated attic was toasty!
